Mirror Lake Highway by motorcycle
The high road out of Salt Lake City. State Route 150 leaves Kamas and climbs into the Uinta Mountains, over Bald Mountain Pass at 10,715 feet, which Visit Utah calls Utah's highest paved road (Visit Utah). The metro area is less than two hours away (Visit Utah), so it works as a day ride for riders who fly into SLC.
The route at a glance
- Start: SR-32 (Main Street) in Kamas. End: the Wyoming line, where the road becomes WYO 150 toward Evanston (Wikipedia SR-150).
- Length: about 55 miles by the mileposts (54.7) (Wikipedia SR-150). Visit Utah counts 42 miles (Visit Utah); the gap is not explained, so plan on the longer number.
- Highest point: Bald Mountain Pass, 10,715 ft (Wikipedia SR-150).
- Season: typically open from mid-May to mid-fall (Visit Utah). In winter it is closed from milepost 14.6 to 48.6 and used by snowmobiles (Wikipedia SR-150). Check UDOT for current closures before you go.
- Time: a half day out and back to the pass from Kamas, a full day with stops (estimate).
Fuel and phones: read this first
Fill up in Kamas. The Visit Utah byway page lists fuel only there (Mirror Lake Service Chevron, 2 N Main St) and none along the highway (Visit Utah). Cell signal in the Uintas is spotty or non-existent (Visit Utah), so download your map before you leave town.
Recreation pass
Riding the byway without stopping is free (Visit Utah). Stopping at the recreation sites (Provo River Falls, Mirror Lake and the other trailheads and picnic areas) needs a Mirror Lake Scenic Corridor pass: $10 for 3 days, $20 for 7 days or $60 for a year, and America the Beautiful passes are honored (USDA Forest Service, May 2026). Buy one in Kamas (the Chevron, Kamas Food Town, Samak Smokehouse or High Mountain Restaurant), at the Kamas ranger office, or online; the self-service fee tubes along the road take cash and checks only (Visit Utah). The pass is meant for a dashboard, so on a bike keep it with you where a ranger can see it.
Kamas to Wyoming
Kamas and Samak. The road starts at Main Street in Kamas and runs east past Samak (Wikipedia SR-150). Kamas has no hotels; Heber City and Park City are the usual bases (Visit Utah).
Provo River Falls. An overlook with facilities; people wade and swim in the lower pools (Visit Utah).
Campgrounds. Sulphur, Trial Lake, Lilly Lake, Butterfly and Mirror Lake campgrounds sit between 9,100 and 10,400 feet (Visit Utah). Vault toilets only, no water hookups.
Bald Mountain Pass, 10,715 ft. The top of the road, with Hayden Peak, Kletting Peak and Holiday Park Peak around it (Visit Utah). Bring a warm layer: it is far colder up here than in the valley.
Mirror Lake. The lake the highway is named for, with the largest campground on the road at 10,400 ft (Visit Utah).
Bear River Ranger Station. A restored historic tie hack cabin, open seasonally (Visit Utah). The road ends at the Wyoming line and on as WYO 150 toward Evanston (Wikipedia SR-150).
Before you ride
- Weather: conditions change fast in the high Uintas. Snow can close the road early in fall; hazardous conditions are likely from November to February (Visit Utah).
- Wildlife: bears live here (Visit Utah); store food properly if you camp.
- Questions on the day: Kamas Ranger Station, 435-783-4338 (Visit Utah).
- Rules for visiting riders (helmets, eye protection, lane filtering): Riding in Utah.
Make it a day
- From Salt Lake City: Park City and Heber are the usual bases for Kamas (Visit Utah). More SLC rides: Salt Lake City.
- Two passes in one day: Wolf Creek Pass (SR-35) also starts near Kamas. Park City and Heber.
- Ride on north: out and back is the simple plan; WYO 150 continues to Evanston and I-80 if you want a loop home.
- More Uinta riding: the eastern end of the range is on our Flaming Gorge guide.
